Rory's hands-on training

Having a younger brother with autism, Rory wanted to take a hands-on approach to learning how to help support him.

The Brighton Secondary Year 11 student has been studying towards his CHC33015 Certificate III Individual Support (Disability) through Minda’s SA Learning Centre (RTO code 4881) in our VET in Schools pathway.

With the theory part complete, Rory has been enjoying clocking up his 120 placement hours in MyPath LSP4 under the guidance of Support Leader Michael Charlton.

“My little brother Ryan has autism and I wanted to learn how to support him. I really enjoy interacting with everyone in the program whether it’s here in the workshop or things like paper shredding and pottery,” Rory says.

Rory spends time with clients like David in the Fix n’ Things program as well as a range of other fun activities including going on outings in the community, swimming, assisting clients with hands-on tasks and supporting group activities throughout the day.

“It’s great getting out and about with clients and gaining that experience.”

VETiS programs are undertaken by school students as part of the senior secondary certificate. Credit gained from a nationally recognised VET qualification within the Australian Qualifications Framework count towards students’ SACE credits.
